Barnes, Belton and Bulls Bigging It Up

Another super matchplay night at Collyer’s on Friday night with 22 players strutting their stuff in three round-robin groups, a process occupying all 11 tables set out in the sports hall.

Freya Bull and mum Becky made excellent debuts in the C group. Both got busy playing and winning lots of matches. When the two met however it was mum who stamped parental authority on the proceedings by winning in straight sets. Whilst the girls got in six matches apiece Bobby Barnes was on a comparative work to rule by only getting in four but quality not quantity was the watchword for the youngster as he won them all. Caleb Belton was also on good form in winning four from his five, surviving a stern examination by Aadrika Shibu but his sole defeat coming at the hands of the fast improving Tom Lewsey. Well done to Susie Rowbottom for adding to Bilal Rehman-Furs’ results woes.

Alain Shibu made light work of gaining a 100% win rate in Group B, albeit Jude Lane took a set off him, and will be back in the top tier next week. He also regained the upper hand against older brother Alrain with a straight sets win. Big hitting Alrain also suffered a surprise defeat to Steve Ledger in five sets. Dan Peskett made a promising first appearance and managed to gain a win over Harry Llewellyn. Llewellyn had to be content with a single win over Ledger as the sole fruit of his efforts on the night. Jude Lane won two but found both Shibus too strong.

Well done Chris Goodier for climbing his Everest in finally getting the best of nemesis Tat On Man in a 3-2 thriller. It took so much out of him that he only managed to get another two matches in on the night including another five set victory against Oskar Crook. Finally a night where Tat On Man did not go unbeaten, however in terms of workrate he showed the youngsters around him the way by being the only player to complete a full complement of seven matches, all 3-0 wins aside from the Goodier confrontation. Tim Clennell debuted with two wind and two losses and Zack Bull went one better with a three and two record. No joy at all for Rahil Rehman-Furs or Ollie Pepper.
