National Cadet League Day 1 - Good Start by HTTC Teams But Crusaders in Control

And they’re off. The Horsham based leg of the 2019-20 National Cadet League season got underway in fine style last Sunday at Collyer’s Sixth Form College. All the worries in the lead up about court dimensions, food access and Brexit evaporated as 18 teams and 56 youngsters just got on with playing their best and having fun in smooth and timely fashion across the 14 tables available. Even the coffee machine worked for those that cared to use it. The stars truly came into alignment for this opener.

Behaviour was impeccable throughout the day from players, spectators and coaches alike and if there were any disputes they must have been quiet ones as the organiser didn’t spot any and wasn’t called into any troubleshooting action. A minor tremor did reverberate through some of the coaches in the spectator area of the hall as it was announced that there were no scoring machines available but as it was the players braved the deprivation and proved themselves more than capable of counting up to 11…in their heads. OK a few did need to resort to fingers and thumbs and things may have got a bit hairy when sets went to deuce but by and large the umpiring was negotiated well without counting aids. Crisis averted.

So to the play. The word Crusader conjures up images of fearsome warriors dressed up to do battle with the Infidel. This picture wasn’t too far wrong actually as this Crusader crew, just from down the road in leafy Sutton if you weren’t aware, came fully prepared for ping pong battle. Each of their three teams, one in each division, smashed all opponents brought before them and all finished top of their tier. Across their ranks they only lost two out of 81 matches all day. Two of their teams came as squads so even the idea of locking one of their players up in the toilets was not an option that could be resorted to. And to make things even worse added to their obvious playing talent the crusading horde all came across as fun loving and modest. Good and nice; say it isn’t so.

Well anyway well done Crusaders, very impressive. Prepare yourself for battle in higher divisions in later rounds. Promotion and relegation between divisions after meeting 2 will be on a two-up, two-down basis.

Crusaders look certainties to achieve a double-whammy of promotions but as to who will join them things looks less sure. Both issues are Brighton versus Horsham Spinners ones. In Division 2 Spinners B holds the slight advantage courtesy of a 5-4 win over their close rival Brighton B. This was a tremendous last match to the day. Only two individual matches were won in straight sets, five went to five and no player was able to dominate and win all their matches. At four wins all Alfie Finn (Spinners) and George Hunt (Brighton) came together to play the deciding match. Finn kept going a set ahead and Hunt kept striking back to level, with only one problem: by the time Finn had gone ahead for the third time Hunt had run out of sets from which to level again. Spinners take a two point lead over Brighton A into the next meeting and unless someone switches them on to a slow cycle they look strong favourites for elevation. Everything will come out in the wash next time out.

In Division 3 the roles are reversed as Brighton C hold a marginal lead over Horsham Spinners C despite suffering a 6-3 defeat against their promotion rival chiefly as a result of three mid-match five setters all going the way of the Spin. Main man for Spinners was the all-day undefeated Jacob Treeby-Goodall and for Brighton, Isobel Langridge, one of three girls strutting their stuff in the hall, was excellent winning all but her match against Treeby-Goodall. Brighton’s Milo Dexter was another player in the division to win all his matches from the six he played. Despite a full house of team wins Spinners’ slight deficit in the promotion race came down to leaking points against Horsham in their other two matches, most notably Horsham G for whom Ben Griffiths played a stormer to claim a brace as part of his team’s haul of four points.

At the top of the tree Horsham Spinners A is at the front of the queue of teams trying to hold on to the Crusader coat tails. Freddie Marchant was in fine form to notch up a full nine wins in a row and if Spinners are to cramp Crusaders’ style he’ll have to fire when the two superpowers come together next up. Horsham A gave Spinners A a good run for their money with Rahil Rehman-Furs and Morgan Turner each gaining two wins but falling foul of the marauding Marchant and leaving the team 5-4 adrift as they did so. Horsham A lie in third just ahead of a Brighton A team chiefly inspired by James Brandon and no doubt the meeting of the two next time will inform who wins mid-table supremacy.

It was a tough day for a number of the Horsham teams and players but their coaches were delighted with their progress in light of the relative inexperience of many, including a number taking part in their first proper tournament, the superb attitudes and temperaments shown, and some excellent performance steps forward even if not always reflected in the results. Some can also take heart from the likelihood that after the promotion/relegation shake and vac at the end of meeting 2 things will get easier as some of the high performing teams will be moving onwards and upwards. So Evan Erskine be proud that you bounced back from six straight losses to win your last three; Harry Llewellyn that you won two top tier matches despite having all that hair flashing across your eyes like windscreen wipers on a car; Luke Harrison for coming so close – 22-20 in the fifth – to claiming a win against a Crusader for Horsham F; Leo Hardwick for gathering himself to fight rather than flight in the face of his nerves at the start of the day and winning his first properly competitive match, and to all the other players who either didn’t win a match or just won one well done for sticking in there and trying hard to the end of the day. And the same sentiment goes to all the other players from other teams in this regard; your spirit was commendable.

Looking forward already to meeting 2 on Sunday 15th December. Let’s hope it’s another day just as good as the first one.
