Laurie Barber

Club member Laurie talks about his involvement in the game

Laurie, when did you start playing TT?

I was about 15 so 1966.  Stopped about 10 years later.  Re-started 2007.

What do you enjoy about playing the game?

It is fast and requires lots of skill, which unfortunately I don’t possess!

Any particular frustrations about playing TT you would like to air?

Not frustrations as such but I do prefer the old style of first to 21.  Selfishly, that is only because it helps me as I take so long to adjust to an opponent to win many 11 pointers and I play better when I am in a rhythm which can be developed in a longer game.

What’s your best win ever?

Can’t remember.  There aren’t many!  I do recall playing in the league a couple of years back, being 8-0 down and finally losing 14-12.

What’s your playing style?

In my younger days it was very defensive with lots of chopping.  More attacking now, but the game has changed so much I am almost starting from scratch.

What are your other sporting/non-sporting interests?

Cricket, football, tennis, snooker, driving, walking, DIY.

What do you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses as a player?

Strength:  Determination.  Weakness:  Inconsistency.

What’s your best shot?

Forehand topspin/smash - when I can get it within 20 feet of the table!

What blade / rubbers do you use?

Joola balsa blade.  It is extremely light, with Donic Quattro Aronda rubbers.  I didn’t like them at first as they seemed to be so dead but they do absorb spin well and they will impart spin to good effect.

What team and division do you play in?

I don’t at the moment but might next year dependent upon the condition of my now arthritic neck.

How did your last league season go?

Badly!

Why is HTTC the club for you?

Very friendly club with members always willing to play each other regardless of ability, age or gender

As somebody that attends coaching regularly what feature of your game do you think you have most improved in recent years?

Just a general improvement and understanding of the correct shots to play.  Incorporating them into your game is a different matter and takes more practice than I have!

What kind of temperament do you have on the table?

Depends on my mood.  I am fine unless the current Mrs. Barber has upset me!  I seem to play better and am more determined when I am behind in a game.

If you could change something about table tennis what would it be?

I know you can’t go backwards but I would revert to first to 21.

Do you have any funny stories to tell about your table tennis career?

Back in the 1970’s when I was playing the Croydon Business league I defeated a woman from the division above in a cup match.  I have never seen anyone quite so upset over losing a table tennis match.  I found it quite amusing.  She didn’t!

Thanks for your thoughts and time Laurie!
